Programs
One of the most important aspects of a good fire department is its public education program. From the Survive Alive House to Safety Day the Cedarburg Fire Department continually educates the public in fire safety. The better educated the public is in fire prevention the less work there is for the volunteers.
Survive Alive House
The Survive Alive House was built in 1987 on the second floor of the Station 3. One half of the Survive Alive House is a bedroom to teach children what to do in the event of an emergency while in bed. There are various types of windows the children learn to open. When in use, a child lies on the bed and pretends to sleep. Artificial smoke fills the room and smoke alarms are then activated to warn the child of a possible fire. The child is then taught to find the safest way out of the room, either a door or a window. This is usually taught to children in 2nd and 3rd grade. The other half of the Survive Alive House is used to teach students about kitchen safety. A full kitchen is setup to allow for the demonstration of safe cooking practices. Students in 5th grade typically are taught kitchen safety.
Safety Town
One of the first times a child learns about fire safety might be during Safety Town, which is run through the Cedarburg Junior Women’s Club. One of the days the children come to the firehouse and learn the basics of fire safety such as Stop, Drop, and Roll. The children also get to check out all of the fire trucks.
Open House
Open House is in May. All of the Cedarburg Fire Departments equipment is on display along with personal to answer any questions.
Ride Home From School
The Cedarburg Fire Department donates rides home from school to various groups to raffle off. The ride home typically includes being picked up from school by a firefighter with one of the fire trucks. Before they leave the school some questions about fire safety and the fire truck are asked. Most of the family usually comes along for the ride which lasts around a half an hour.
Battery Give Away
During Fire Prevention Week and the weekend of Change Your Clock Change Your Batteries the Cedarburg Fire Department gives away free 9V batteries to put in your smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors. Watch our events page for upcoming battery give-a-ways.
Pizza Delivery
“Delivering Fire Prevention,” a program of Safe Kids of Southeast Wisconsin Coalition and the Cedarburg Fire Department. This program is designed to increase awareness about the necessity of having working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in every home, while reminding homeowners to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors twice a year.
Families are chosen at random to have their pizza delivered by a fire truck. If they have working smoke detectors in their home, their pizza will be free, compliments of the restaurant. Some families may receive a free smoke or carbon monoxide detector, and all families will receive fire prevention education from Safe Kids of Southeast Wisconsin.
Fire Extinguisher Demonstrations
The Cedarburg Fire Department trains many people on the use of fire extinguishers each year. A propane burning fire extinguisher prop can be taken to any location if your organization would like to be trained in the use of fire extinguishers. There is a short class room part to educate everyone on the different types of extinguishers.
